The stellar work coming out of our Features department has been recognized in two prestigious national/international contests. Congratulations to all involved.
In the 25th annual Society for Features Journalism Excellence in Features Writing Competition, the Post-Gazette took awards in three categories:
Best Section: The Magazine section was named among the top three Best Features Sections in our circulation category. Other winners were the Edmonton Journal and The Virginian Pilot
Feature Specialty Reporting
2nd place: Mackenzie Carpenter — Writing about writers: Jeanne Marie Laskas, Charles Dickens, Nora Ephron.
3rd place: Scott Mervis, Pop music — The Who’s Quadraphenia, How good is Eddie Van Halen, The sale of Paul’s Records.
Honorable Mention: Barbara Vancheri, Movies — Titanic 3-D, “Argo” Toronto buzz, Summer Season lessons.
A&E Feature
3rd place: Melissa McCart, “Insights about a city can be found at restaurant and bar counters.”
In the Association of Food Journalists contest, we are finalists in the following categories:
Best Newspaper Food Coverage — Bob Batz and staff
Best Newspaper Special Food Project and Best Food Multimedia Presentation — Gretchen McKay’s “This is Pittsburgh Food” series
Winners for first, second or third place will be announced Sept. 19 at AFJ’s annual conference in Park City, Utah.
