Detroit — Former NewsGuild secretary-treasurer Sara Steffens was elected Monday (June 8) secretary-treasurer of CWA, our union’s second highest post.
Sara defeated incumbent secretary-treasurer Annie Hill at the CWA convention in Cobo Hall here in the Motor City. The vote was 194,461 to 150,914–Sara captured 56 percent of the vote.
Sara will serve with Chris Shelton who will become the new CWA president, succeeding Larry Cohen who is retiring.
Pittsburgh convention delegates Mike Fuoco and Melissa Tkach supported Sara who will become the highest-ranking TNG member in the CWA administration.
Sara was instrumental in securing $250,000 in mobiliziing money from CWA for us and the two other CWA units in the Unity Council (the mailers and advertising) that thankfully we didn’t need and, after contract ratification, secured us $36,000 in legal reimbursements from CWA to cover lawyer fees during the recent contract talks with the P-G.
